Wrightsville Reservoir

Beautiful day for a kayak. Headed out for the Wrightsville Reservoir (Montpelier). Put in at the boat launch, lots of people coming and going, waterskiing, jetskiing and sitting in the sun.

We looked at the hand drawn sign and realized that if we went north, there was a restricted area (no wake) so it would be quieter. We paddled that way and soon it was smooth sailing. We passed a beach area with lots of families and kids.

Then it got even more remote and after a bit more paddling, we came to a very big waterfall with alot of current going against us. We had a little fun paddling into the current and riding it downstream and then we tied up to a log and had lunch. It was really nice sitting in the sun with a slight current moving us around a bit. With a little less water, there is a nice place on the right side of the river/waterfall that you can pull out and sit on the rocks. There is even a couple of chairs for that purpose.

After lunch we coasted out with the current and explored the east side of the lake. We were peddling and came across a Great Blue Heron who was hunting. He really didn't care about us, except that we were in the way. Three times he let us get within 10 feet of him, only to then fly off and try to fish again. Got some great photos.

Not a ton of wildlife in the middle of the day, but it was fairly uncrowded, even on a nice Sunday afternoon. Definately better kayaking on the north part. The south part was full of boats going fast.

Took us about 2:30 hours to do 3.35 miles.
