We went for a quick after-work kayak and had a very enjoyable hour and a half on this small lake/large pond. Right away we saw two loon with a very large baby. We also some some Great Blue Heron in the marshy area immediately to the right of the boat launch.

Green River Reservoir
It has been a busy summer so we finally got our kayaks out and on the water. We decided to give Green River Reservoir a visit since we had heard so much about it from our friends. Green River Reservoir is a fairly new Vermont State Park and you can tell that they have done alot of recent renovations and improvments. They have also recently instituted a $3.00 per person user fee. Camping is available by boat only - they seem to have over 30 remote sites that looked very nice and private - some even have composting toilets that them.

We followed the shoreline on the western half of the Lake most of the time and then cut across to a nice picnic spot. We did not go all the way up the spur at the northern part of the lake since we had already been out for a few hours. We could see people heading that way and it looked shallower and more marshlike.

Even though it sort of looked like it might rain, it was actually a very nice day. The sun peeked out once and awhile and it was quite hot at times, but mostly it was a nice, pleasant temperature with a gentle breeze to keep us cool.

We saw tons of loons, one with two babies riding on her back. We saw Common Mergansers and lots of evidence of beavers.
All in all, it was a nice day to get away from the office and brush off the kayak cobwebs. We covered about 3 1/4 miles in about 2 1/2 hours.

Norton Pond

We got up bright and early and drove about 10 miles to Norton Pond. It was foggy and very eerie when we put in. It was fun to see the mist roll over the pond and finally lift.

We immediately saw two loons with two babies. Very neat. We saw a peregrine falcon (we think) nest, herons, frogs, cedar waxwings, a mink (yes, so cool), and many other small birds.

We kayaked all of the southern end (it is a big pond) and explored all of the coves and inlets. It was a great 3 hour/3 mile kayak that was very lazy and relaxing.

Island Pond, VT
Many years ago, we discovered Island Pond and Brighton State Park. We had only ever camped there in October so it was a pleasant surprise to see the area in the middle of the summer. We had a great campsite - very private and quiet but near the boat launch and we spend quite a bit of time kayaking in Spectacle Pond (not Island Pond, which is next door and much bigger).
We saw a nesting pair of loons with baby. We must have gotten a bit too close because one of them put on a huge display with lots of wing flapping and water tossing. Very cool though.
We also went hiking (very buggy) and saw lots of cool flowers, frogs and mushrooms etc. No moose, unfortunately, but next time we are coming back with a car so that we can explore some of the back roads.

Island Pond, NH
We had a great four days at the Camp. Very relaxful and we got a chance to do a bunch of kayaking. We covered most of Island Pond, checked on the geocache and also spent some time reading and relaxing. Here is a nice sunset from the porch.
After one kayak, we were sitting on the dock listening to the loon cry and we looked up to see a mature adult eagle swooping and gliding over head. No wonder the loon was agitated. He was beautiful.

We checked out all of the inlets and coves and came across some really pretty water lilies.

Dad claims that NH doesn't need the Old Man in the Mountain anymore - they can now use the Dog on Island Pond instead...

Robb Reservoir
Mom, Dad, Sue and I headed to the Robb Reservoir which is only a few minutes from the Camp. It was a nice day, not too hot, but pretty warm.

Go THAT way, Mom!
We went to the Robb Reservoir with mom and dad. Had a nice hour or so paddle around the lake. Should be lots of wildlife at a different time. Another group saw a snapper, and we saw a couple of herons and a couple of painted turtles.

Nubansuit Lake, NH
Mom and I went to Nubansuit Lake and Spoonwood Pond. It was a little choppy and a little busy on Nubanusit but we got a chance to see a young eagle sitting on its nest.
Then we kayaked over to a take out place and we carried our kayaks up a short flight of stairs into the Pond.
The pond was good sized. We didn't go far, but we paddled up a bit and then rode the current (slight) and wind back to the small dam.
There was a lot of action on the lake. Boats, kids swimming, lots of paddlers.
